William Edmund "Ed" Clark (born October 10, 1947) is the President and Chief Executive Officer of TD Bank Financial Group (also known as Toronto-Dominion Bank), roles he held since December 20, 2002.

Married with four grown children, Clark and his wife, Frances currently make their home in Toronto. Clark earned $11.1 million in 2009.

Banking career

Clark was appointed President and Chief Executive Officer on December 20, 2002. Prior to this appointment, he was President and Chief Operating Officer since July 6, 2000.

Clark joined TD Bank Financial Group as Chairman and CEO of TD Canada Trust following TD’s acquisition of Canada Trust Financial Services on February 1, 2000. In this role he oversaw the successful integration of the TD and Canada Trust retail and electronic banking operations.

Clark was President and CEO of Canada Trust Financial Services Inc. previously since January 1994. Mr. Clark’s initial position at Canada Trust was Vice Chairman and Chief Operating Officer.

In 1985, he joined Merrill Lynch, and three years later was appointed Chairman and Chief Executive Officer of Morgan Financial Corporation, a position he held until he joined Canada Trust Financial Services Inc. in 1991.

Before banking

From 1974 to 1984, he held a number of senior positions in the federal government including Senior Assistant Deputy Minister, Energy, Mines and Resources Canada. During his time in government Clark helped develop the National Energy Program, a policy that was very unpopular in Western Canada and earned Clark the moniker 'Red Ed' in the Alberta oil industry. Shorty after Brian Mulroney took office, Clark was fired.[1]

Education

Clark graduated from University College [2] at the University of Toronto in 1969 with a Bachelor of Arts degree. He earned his Master’s degree and Doctorate in Economics from Harvard University in 1971 and 1974 respectively.

Edmund has also received honorary degrees from Mount Allison University and Queen’s University. In 2010, he was made a Member of the Order of Canada.[3]

Community involvement

Listed as member of the Bilderberg Steering Committee,.[4] Ed serves as a Director of TD Bank, N.A. (a wholly owned subsidiary of TD Bank Group) and its subsidiaries as Vice-Chairman and Director of TD Ameritrade Holding Corporation. He is also a member of the Board of Directors of the C.D. Howe Institute, a member of the Chair's Advisory Council for Habitat for Humanity Toronto, and provides support to Woodgreen Community Services, an organization that delivers programs to build sustainable communities in the Toronto area.

Ed and his wife Fran make their home in Toronto. They have four children as well as four grandchildren.
